Tony Schiess, FHM's music teacher, is an accomplished guitarist and composer.  Growing up in Atlanta, Tony performed locally and studied jazz guitar as a teenager under noted educator Dave Frackenpohl before moving to Asheville, North Carolina, where he graduated Magna Cum Laude and with Departmental Distinction in Jazz Studies from the University of North Carolina-Asheville.  While living in Asheville, he performed and recorded with diverse groups such as the UNCA Jazz Big Band, Rent Party, The Common Time Quartet, To Whom It Concerns, and others.  Performances at diverse venues such as The Cotton Club in Atlanta, Georgia, and Stella Blue in Asheville, North Carolina, as well as being heard on numerous radio stations helped Tony develop a reputation as a unique player on the southeastern music scene.

In 2006, Tony moved to Boston, Massachusetts, where he became active in the free jazz scene around Cambridge while studying under Joe Morris, George Garzone, Charlie Banacos, and Fernando Brandao at Longy School of Music.  After two years of study and regular performances at The Lily Pad, he graduated with a Masters degree in Modern American Music with Distinction.  In 2008, he moved to Denver to pursue teaching, performing, and composing full time.  He is currently on the faculty at Free Horizon Montessori, Boulder School of Music, Band Dynamics, and his own private studio where he teaches guitar, bass, mandolin, band production, songwriting, theory, ear training, and jazz improvisation.
